Biography

Lo Sheng Yen, known to her family as Bonnie, was born in Sichuan Province, China, and grew up in Taiwan. In 1983 she emigrated to the United States, where for the next two decades she worked and raised her children in Pensacola, Florida.
In 2002, upon retiring from the family restaurant business, she sought a creative pursuit for her newfound leisure. A work of art fashioned from discarded soda cans offered the spark. Considering the catalogues and periodicals that gathered in her home, she saw that something beautiful might be made from what would otherwise be thrown away, and began to cut printed pages and compose them into pictures. Her first work depicted an underwater scene of tropical fish.
Inspired by her own garden and the natural beauty around her, she continued to experiment, composing flowering fields, coastal views and tranquil landscapes from menus, advertisements and the ordinary printed matter that arrived by post. Over the years she has refined her craft into a singular body of work.
She resides in Monterey Park, California.
On the Work
Lo Sheng Yen’s work extends the long traditions of collage and mosaic. At first glance her pictures recall the oil paintings of the Impressionists; closer study reveals compositions of printed paper, cut with painstaking precision.
Guided by nature and a spirit of experiment, she transforms the most ordinary printed matter, paper otherwise destined to be discarded, into works of vivid colour. The artist works in Southern California.
